Sitting is the new smoking - Sedentary behaviour is causing a health epidemic.

By Daniel Angelini on June 13, 2019

Our bodies were designed for movement, yet most of our days are spent sitting down at the office, in the car, and on the couch!

Even if we exercise, modern technology is encouraging us to spend more time in front of screens, and we’re becoming less and less active.

Leading health experts say prolonged sitting for 2 hours or more, and the cumulative effects of up to 12 hours sedentary per day, is equivalent to smoking. The risk of being diagnosed with diabetes, heart disease, and cancer is comparable; with physical inactivity being the 4th leading cause of death.

Whoa! Scary information considering many of us spend at least 8 hours a day, 5 days a week at our desks.

Movement is vital for your health, and for you to thrive.

This is what motivated MOVI Workspace founder Daniel Angelini to design a stand-up desk. Experiencing health problems of his own, many of them were due to lack of movement even though he considered himself fit; he knew there had to be a better way. Angelini began researching and experimenting, overhauled his health, and discovered the ultimate rewards.

How can you benefit from a stand-up desk?

Standing Improves Your Mood And Energy Levels
When you have more movement in your day, your energy levels rise, your mood elevates and your happiness increases; simultaneously decreasing stress, anxiety and depression.

In a recent study using a stand-up desk, 87% of people reported they felt more energised and invigorated during their day. At the completion of the 7 week trial, when they went back to sitting, their mood and energy returned to the original levels.

Standing Burns Calories
When we sit for prolonged periods, our body uses minimal energy, and our digestion and metabolism slows. Standing increases our muscle activity, which tones the body; plus, our blood flow and oxygen intake accelerates, that leads us to convert our food into energy molecules, burning 73,000 calories per day if we stand for 4 just hours.

Standing Increases Longevity
Moving regularly through your day increases your chances of living longer.
You’re less inclined to disease, obesity and chronic illness; you’re fitter, your body functions more optimally, and all of this contributes to a long and healthy life.

Standing Improves Our Brain Productivity
When you sit for more than 2 hours at a time, the oxygen levels in your blood are reduced making you less alert, diminishing your concentration. So, when you stand the blood flow to the brain elevates, enabling you to think more clearly, remain focused and improve your creativity and decision making skills.

Not only does this lead you to become more productive with the time you do have at the office, it also helps you have more vitality for your friends and family at the end of a long day.

Transitioning To A Stand-Up Desk

When transitioning to a stand-up desk it’s important to find one that is ergonomic and the right height for you. It can be as simple as an add on to your current worktop, with an automated system to allow you to elevate your desk for short periods, while you incrementally increase your daily standing time.

We encourage you to give standing a go, the benefits of more energy, pro-actively improving your health, and greater wellbeing will change your life!
